Cable Shoulder Press

Learn how to perform a cable shoulder press using a functional trainer and neutral-grip Andreoni Bar, including setup, range of motion and pressing technique.

Cable Shoulder Press: Neutral-Grip Shoulder Press on a Cable Machine

The cable shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise performed on a cable machine or functional trainer to train the shoulders through a smooth, controlled range of motion. It can be performed standing or seated, using individual handles or a cable attachment such as the Andreoni Bar.

In this video, the cable machine shoulder press is performed with the Andreoni Bar using a neutral grip, with the palms facing each other throughout the movement. Starting around shoulder height, press the bar upward and overhead while keeping your wrists aligned, torso controlled and elbows moving naturally beneath the handles. Lower the bar slowly back to the starting position while maintaining control and tension through the shoulders.

Neutral-Grip Cable Shoulder Press

A neutral-grip shoulder press places the hands in a palms-in position rather than the traditional palms-forward position used in many overhead press variations. The parallel handles of the Andreoni Bar allow the wrists, elbows and shoulders to follow a natural pressing path while the cambered design provides clearance around the head and shoulders as the bar travels overhead.

Using a cable machine also allows you to adjust the pulley height, body position and starting point of the exercise. This makes it easier to customize the movement and find a comfortable range of motion for your individual setup.

Standing or Seated Cable Shoulder Press

The movement can be performed as either a standing cable shoulder press or a seated cable shoulder press. Standing requires more stabilization from the core and lower body, while the seated version provides a more stable base and allows greater focus on the pressing movement itself.

A functional trainer also makes it easy to increase or decrease resistance quickly between sets, which is useful for warm-up sets, progressive loading and drop sets without having to load or unload weight plates.

Cable Shoulder Press Muscles Worked

The cable shoulder press primarily targets the deltoids, especially the front and side portions of the shoulders. The triceps assist as the elbows extend during the overhead press, while the upper chest and surrounding stabilizing muscles also contribute throughout the movement.

Whether performed as a cable shoulder press, cable overhead press, functional trainer shoulder press or neutral-grip shoulder press, the goal is the same: press the resistance from shoulder level to an overhead position using a controlled range of motion and a stable pressing path.
