Why Comfortable Gym Accessories Can Help You Build More Muscle

No pain, no gain? Not exactly.

Building muscle requires effort. It requires challenging resistance, progressive overload and enough hard training over time to force your body to adapt.

But there is an important difference between muscular effort and unnecessary pain.

The burning sensation of a hard set, muscular fatigue and the challenge of squeezing out another rep are part of resistance training. Pain from a handle digging into your hand, a rope crushing your fingers, an awkward wrist position or an attachment forcing your joints into an uncomfortable path is something completely different.

That kind of discomfort isn't making the target muscle work harder. In many cases, it's simply making the exercise harder to perform.

And that can actually get in the way of progress.

The Goal Is to Challenge the Muscle, Not Your Hands and Joints

Imagine you're performing a heavy cable triceps pushdown.

Your triceps still have several good repetitions left, but the hard rubber end of the rope is digging painfully into your fingers. You stop the set because your hands can't tolerate any more pressure.

What failed first?

Not your triceps.

The accessory did.

The same thing can happen when an attachment creates uncomfortable pressure on the wrist, restricts your natural movement or forces you into a grip that doesn't suit the exercise.

For hypertrophy, you want the target muscles to be the limiting factor as often as practical. The less you're distracted or limited by unnecessary pressure and discomfort, the more attention and effort you can direct toward actually training the muscle.

That is where comfortable equipment becomes more than a luxury.

It can become a performance tool.

Comfort Can Allow More Productive Training Volume

Training volume is one of the major variables associated with muscle growth. Research examining resistance-training volume has repeatedly found that, in general, performing more productive weekly training volume can produce greater hypertrophy... although the benefits eventually show diminishing returns.

Now consider what happens when your equipment is uncomfortable.

You might:

▪️Stop a set before the target muscle is sufficiently challenged

▪️Use less weight than the muscle can actually handle

▪️Shorten your range of motion

▪️Change your technique to avoid pressure or pain

▪️Skip an exercise altogether

▪️Perform fewer sets

▪️Avoid training that movement as frequently

None of those outcomes are particularly helpful if your goal is progressive overload.

By contrast, a comfortable grip, strap or attachment can make it easier to focus on the movement itself and accumulate high-quality repetitions.

Comfort doesn't make the workout easier. It can make it easier to work the muscle harder.

Comfortable Does Not Mean Easy

This distinction is important.

We're not suggesting your workouts should feel effortless.

A productive hypertrophy set can be extremely demanding. Your heart rate may rise. Your muscles may burn. The last few repetitions may slow dramatically.

That's effort.

Pain from an accessory pinching your fingers or forcing your wrist into an awkward position is not the same thing.

Research comparing resistance training taken all the way to muscular failure with non-failure training also shows that maximum discomfort isn't automatically necessary for maximum growth. Meta-analyses have generally found that training to momentary muscular failure is not required to build muscle, while repeatedly training to failure can create greater fatigue, muscle damage and perceived discomfort.

The lesson isn't to train lightly.

It's to direct your effort where it matters.

Better Comfort Can Help You Train More Consistently

One brutal workout doesn't build an impressive physique.

Months and years of productive workouts do.

Consistency therefore matters enormously.

If an exercise repeatedly hurts your hands, aggravates your wrists or simply feels terrible to perform, there's a good chance you'll eventually avoid it—or unconsciously reduce your effort while performing it.

Research in exercise settings has specifically noted that reducing unnecessary exercise discomfort may help improve adherence.

This creates a simple long-term advantage:

Better comfort → better training experience → more quality work → greater consistency → more opportunities to progress.

That compounding effect matters far more than proving how much unnecessary pain you can tolerate during one workout.

What About Training Frequency?

Comfort can also make it easier to distribute your training across the week.

However, there's an important distinction here.

Simply training a muscle more frequently doesn't automatically cause more hypertrophy. When total weekly training volume is matched, research generally finds that frequency itself has a relatively small effect on muscle growth.

Where additional training days become useful is that they can make it easier to distribute productive weekly volume.

Instead of forcing 15 hard sets into one marathon workout, for example, a lifter might spread that work across multiple sessions while maintaining better performance and technique.

So the benefit isn't necessarily:

More workouts = more muscle.

It's closer to:

Better recovery and comfortable training can make it easier to perform more high-quality work consistently.

And quality work performed consistently is what creates the opportunity for progressive overload.

Pain Can Also Change the Way You Move

Your body is very good at finding ways around discomfort.

Unfortunately, those compensations aren't always helpful.

If a handle hurts your wrist, you may change your elbow position. If a rope hurts your fingers, you may loosen your grip or shorten the movement. If an attachment forces an awkward path, your shoulders or torso may compensate.

Over time, poor technique combined with heavy resistance and inadequate recovery can contribute to injury risk. Research examining injuries associated with resistance training identifies factors including heavy loading, improper technique, overuse and insufficient recovery.

And an injury creates the worst possible training program:

No training at all.

Missing several weeks because of an avoidable hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder problem will affect progress far more than squeezing one extra painful repetition out of a poorly designed attachment.

Good Equipment Should Almost Disappear

Great training equipment shouldn't become the exercise.

It should allow you to perform the exercise.

The attachment should feel secure, comfortable and natural enough that your attention moves away from the equipment and toward the muscle you're trying to train.

A difficult workout and a painful workout are not the same thing.

Muscular fatigue? Expected.

A deep pump? Fine.

The final repetitions becoming extremely difficult? That's training.

Sharp pain, pinching, joint irritation, painful pressure from an attachment or having your grip give up because a handle is digging into your fingers?

That's not a badge of honor.

It's a limitation.

For hypertrophy, the winning strategy isn't to make every exercise as uncomfortable as possible.

It's to create an environment where you can train hard, progressively overload, accumulate enough quality volume, recover and come back ready to do it again.

Comfort doesn't replace hard training.

Comfort can give you the capacity to train harder.

And over hundreds of workouts, that difference can add up.
